Sixteen-Year-Old Jhoanny Alvarez Tragically Killed in Queens, NY, After Rejection of Advances from Drunk Driver
On Saturday, September 13th, 2025, 16-year-old Jhoanny Alvarez tragically lost her life in Elmhurst, Queens, New York, after being struck by a drunk driver. The devastating incident unfolded around 4:10 a.m. near Roosevelt Avenue and Benham Street, just outside the Prima Donna restaurant.
Jhoanny, a Venezuelan immigrant, was walking with her mother, stepfather, and boyfriend when a 38-year-old man, Edwin Cruz Gomez, allegedly made inappropriate sexual remarks toward them. A confrontation ensued, and after the argument, Jhoanny and her family began to walk away.
In a shocking act of violence, Gomez, under the influence of alcohol, got into his SUV and deliberately drove onto the sidewalk, striking Jhoanny and pinning her against a pillar. Her injuries were fatal. While Jhoanny’s mother and stepfather were injured, they are expected to recover.
Jhoanny was a dedicated student and a bright spirit known for her kindness and determination. She brought joy and optimism to all who knew her. In the wake of this tragedy, the community has expressed its sorrow, with many mourning the loss of such a young, vibrant life.
Edwin Cruz Gomez faces serious charges, including second-degree murder and vehicular manslaughter. He is set to appear in court on Friday, September 19th.
Jhoanny’s death has left the community heartbroken and demanding justice.
